Without You whet the appetites of house aficionados and dancefloor dwellers during 2010 and with Canadian duo Art Department’s debut album The Drawing Board out now, it’s time to point your attention to this minimal house monster. The arrangement reflects the best of what minimal techno and house offered during the 00′s: efficiency, subtlety and delicacy. And a little despair. What the duo also have succeeded in is giving it an emotional depth most electronic dance music lacks while still using very simple means. The dark, haunting vocals of Kenny Glasgow of the duo in all their simplicity and lack of nuance goes ”I don’t know what to do / I just can’t make it without you”. The murdering bassline of the song, however, makes that sentiment sound like Glasgow is in the middle of coming to a horrifying conclusion, a disturbing fact dawning upon him. This is the scariest shit since Silent Shout.
