It’s intriguing how Air Waves’ extremely simplistic major chord progression on Knock Out, the standout from last year’s Dungeon Dots album, can strike such an emotional single chord inside of me. It’s a chord of depression-via-helplessness-gone-indifferent towards the state of things. The rest of the simple instrumentation around that brilliant chord progression is aptly kept at a level of not straying further off than is necessary. This makes it a mellow jam for moments of reflection when things look dark. Air Waves main woman Nicole Schneit’s lyrics sees a boxing match as a metaphor for the struggles of a new relationship but for those who’d like to read something else into Knock Out’s universal melodic sentiment the lines ”Can you give / Me a knockout / I will turn it inside out” can be turned into a confident, confrontational spirit and the lines ”I’m alive / I’m on fire / For the first time in my life.” can turn that frown upside down. It’s as simple as that.
