
You’re My Kind oozes with drug-addled menace. Caitlin Devin is a femme fatale seducing its victim: you, the listener. Try resisting the lines ”Covet me. You’re my kind”.
It starts from a quiet low, a throbbing bass drum merely pumping its addictive venom into your veins from the very start. Not to mention the synth buzz… it’s like it constantly gets ahead of itself and trips over unhearable and invisible glitches, spilling all over the beat, creating its own disturbed rhythm within the rhythm. Thomas Schumacher and Stephan Bodzin have masterfully structured this track for maximum impact with all the best tricks from the golden years of minimalistic techno. Like an evil twin of the traditional pop structure with two peaks/choruses the track just barely falls back into its beginning state towards the end, completing the circle. But just barely. When we listeners leave the track it is just about to catch its breath again. The deed is done. The mission accomplished. A most sinister and delicate assassination performed. You’re lucky it wasn’t you, after all, that she was singing to… ”You’re my kind…”
Tip: As with any good horror flick, You’re My Kind is best experienced alone in a dark room.
