The Swedish breakthrough of the year is the Umeå band Deportees - without any doubt. Praise has been hailing from the collected Swedish music critics posse and I can do nothing but join them in their euphoria. Deportees’ third album is full of melodic, guitar-based indie pop with tasteful elements of soul and folk woven into the fabric of their songcraft. This has brought some critics and fans down on their knees exclaiming that it’s the very best record of the year. I wouldn’t go as far as that, since I still have Glasvegas striking debut last year fresh in mind. That is not to say that Under The Pavement, The Beach is not the album that puts the definite soundtrack on my summer together with Jonathan Johansson’s En Hand I Himlen.

Not only was I sincerely moved by the serene, falsetto vocal harmonies and the running-through-a-summer-field-yet-under-a-dark-cool-refreshening-cloudy-sky guitar poprock style presented by the band the first time I heard the album in late May. I was also struck by the thought that this could and most of all should blow up as one of the best international breakthroughs of the year. But so far Deportees haven’t had any major impact outside of Sweden. The Hypem representation is scaringly low. So that’s why I urge that you check out Under The Pavement, The Beach, and that’s why I try to spread the word about this fantastic band. I am absolutely positive that any true fan of fine indie pop and emotional indie rock will not be disappointed by this album, so while you check it out I’ll try to get hold of their two previous albums: All Prayed Up (2004) and Damaged Goods (2006).
