The pre-summer hype for me is all about 90s revivalism. In specific it’s about this particular track. I grew up with this track firmly etched into my six-yearold mind (What year? I was born 91, you do the math!) through radio spins, MTV video music features and school disco essential plays. At that time I was just like any other kid: devoted to only the most popular and well-known songs of pop music. Not only is Show Me Love a nostalgic trip back to my childhood, but also testimony of my pre-adolescent and first tentative teenage steps. As the theme song to the fantastic Swedish film Fucking Åmål (retitled to Show Me Love for the American release), directed by Lukas Moodyson, Show Me Love symbolizes Swedish teenage culture and represents it internationally - preferrably in connection to Moodyson’s Fucking Åmål.
Lesbians, gay guys and straight peeps all around the world should be able to enjoy this amazing pop song. It’s arguably Max Martin’s best work of all time and one of Robyn’s finest, despite her being a much more credible and independent artist today than back in 97. Why aren’t pop songs like this produced any more? Why has the teen pop genre never been able to top this?
