It’s not often that I get to post music that touches me so deeply that Frida Hyvönen’s music did last autumn when her second proper studio album, Silence Is Wild, was released. The very first song and single of the album struck me like lightning from a clear blue sky. It immediately showcased what a huge step Ms. Hyvönen had made from her debut album. Dirty Dancing is nothing but a masterpiece of alternative pop measures.

There are few songs that rips my heart out as forcefully and lovely as Dirty Dancing does. Hyvönen’s songwriting in this song resembles that of a female Jens Lekman. There’s dead(serious)pan humour as a contrast to the mellow mood of the song. Her brilliant lyrics encompass melancholic and blue-eyed nostalgia, raw, pure and naked vulnerability, strong passion, swooning feelings, bittersweetness and the fantastic sense of time and history that has been lost - all captured in their innermost essences and evident in tiny fragments throughout the whole song. It calls for an emotional rollercoaster of a listen. And it sure is. I can’t listen to it without getting a little lump in my throat. She proves to be a phenomenal and sincere singer using her raw yet crystal clear voice and style to really get under your skin. She is very bold and it has payed out tremendously. Frida makes me remember why the blogosphere is perverted in its search for the next big banger, killer beats and hyped out bands that by NME proclaim the next big thing. In the light of the sheer genius Frida Hyvönen is, I cry for the ignorance of many blogs and for the greatness of this song.

I’m not to step one anyone’s toes but Frida Hyvönen gives me the strength and justification to send out a powerful and important message to awesome blogs like Ohh Crapp, Data Sapiens, Electrorash, BigStereo, Discobelle, Hyperbole, Disco Dust and many others:

Guys, you post awesome music and write excellent blogs, but if the content reflects and represents you as personal individuals in any greater extent, then we do not share the same view of what music is all about. Dirty Dancing represents my view of music that makes life worth living and it is more heartfelt, pure and far better than anything you have ever or will ever post. Prove me wrong… prove me wrong…

This is one of the best and one of my very favourite mp3s I have ever posted. This is a big moment for me.

Frida Hyvönen - Dirty Dancing

Lyrics

The love of my life
when I was a kid
came by my house this morning
We used to dance the afternoons away with Kylie
back when the 90’s were dawning

The love of my life
when I was a kid
used to write me the sweetest letters
and one night he shot a couple of birds in a pool
thought it was to impress me

He was my older brother’s friend
and had a light around him
that would chase off any winter
he had no father and his mother seemed younger than ours
and he was a dancer

He had the keys to a place
where we could practice
it felt almost like Dirty Dancing
minus the United States and instead of a resort
it was the Folkets Hus basement

And then I became a singer
and he became a chimny sweeper
and a hunter and a father of two, so far
I got a grand piano and a house with a chimney
and this morning he came by to sweep it

Then we sat on the steps
to the house listening
to the birds of the coming spring singing
he said: get up on the roof and put up a net
or they will build a nest in your chimney

And when I touched
his sweeper’s arm
with my piano fingers
he said: watch Frida your hands will get dirty
and I felt like I had a fever

The dark powers
the mayflowers
the roads on which we travel
how he told me no and how my young heart broke
and how a cold new world unraveled

I guess you do the Dirty now
and I do the Dancing
and once we were Baby and Johnny
in a small boring town where the winters were long
and our real names were Frida and Jimmy
