Speaking of summer hits…
The title is harder to write and remember in its correct form than any other song I can remember. It’s Ella, Elle L’a for those wondering.
Yea, so why is eurodancepop cover diva Kate Ryan appearing on this foremostly alternative/indie blog? Well, because mainstream can have its motivated, well-produced and enjoyable pieces every now and then.
Despite being even poppier and catchier than its 2002 predecessor megahit Désenchantée (another title of which it is impossible to remember the correct spelling) Ella, Elle L’a didn’t manage to reach just as high up on the charts. Both were summer hits and both were covers of French 80s pop songs. Still I have the feeling last year’s summer anthem was even more popular than 2002’s earring. It may because Désenchantée was a #4 hit while Ella, Elle L’a was a #2 hit in Sweden.
Ella, Elle L’a is one of the extremely few summer hits I’ve ever sincerely liked and appreciated being played over and over and over everywhere you went, especially that gorgeous summer. It’s more likely you experienced the same uplifting feeling everytime it was heard if you live in Europe. There’s just something so lovely European about it. Spain (10 times platinum WTF???, it’s sung in French damnit!), Sweden (1 times platinum), The Netherlands and Hungaria were the most severely affected countries who got to experience it. So fresh, so airy, so unpretentiously epic, so poppy, so catchy, such beautiful French which every European tried to imitate… The melody and dancepop/trance chorus are just sooo European in a way.
Of course I had to listen to more of her tracks, and I gotta say… I’ve always been totally down with the European sound, living in Europe and all. I love it! So… Kate Ryan, YOU GO GIRL! Please bring us another wonderfully addictive Euro-banger this year? Calvin Harris (I’m Not Alone = don’t believe the hype! It’s mediocre!) could hook up with Niklas Bergwall or sumfen for the production.
She really got a well-deserved comeback with this hit, after the ever so surprising failure with Je t’adore in the ESC in 2006 (has it been 3 YEARS already?).
Download it, mthrfckr! It’s a blessed awesome pop tune! It will actually be issued in the UK in April. So grab it before any label gets on my back! ;D
Nevermind the silly video, though.

Well, it’s a cover of a french 60’s song really. France Gall. And the original version is much more charming, I dare say.
her name is actually katrien and she’s from belgium.
@ victor
Please, do not spread the word. we (belgians) will never voluntarily admit this fact…
What was the name of the artist who covered it in the 80’s? I remember having the French Top 20 on tape and this was one of my faves
