Ever since Bling Crosby used the track everyone knows about but no one can name, in his track for Buffetlibre’s Rewind 2, I’ve been obsessed with it. The female vocal group The Chordettes of course had a hit with the near-a capella plead to Mr. Sandman to give them someone to hold and love. Pat Ballard wrote it, and what a song he wrote! The chord progression (hence the name of the group I guess) is purely brilliant and old-school romantic in a way that of course would be considered cheesy today. But the dreamy harmonies are matched with a snappy rhythm and a production with a punchy gleam in the eye. And then there’s the singing.
AND THEN THERE’S THE SINGING! Although it may not be obvious. the song calls for a great control of the voice and the four chordettes pull it off with grace and ease. They’ve of course got help from that ancient recording which in normal order pushes some of the higher and emphasized tones to the forefront of the aural output. It’s almost like it makes the recording wobble a little, I don’t know what professionals call it. Either way, it’s a brilliant song and goes anytime you want to cheer up! The bumbumbum’s or bungbungbung’s or whatever are especially addictive. It’s like a dance song you can’t sit still to only in this case you can’t help sing along, sounding like a Sinatra after too much punch, if you’re a guy of course. I don’t know, maybe Sinatra sang better after a few drinks and was always drunk at shows, no idea really. It’s like that time Lois discovers Peter is a highly skilled and talented piano player… only when being drunk as hell. In Family Guy of course, for the ignorant.
